Secure the WhatsApp with Face-ID and Touch-ID

Whatsapp has several new updates this year that have introduced some cool new features. These include biometric unlock functionality in iPhones and the ability to select who can add you to groups. Biometric unlock is really a nice feature if you are the kind of person who lends the people your phone and has nosy friends and relatives who want to see your private conversations.

The latest iOS version 2.19.20 of WhatsApp supports the so-called Touch ID as well as Face ID.

As far as android is concerned, there will be an update in the next few weeks to support the new biometric security feature. In addition to locking the entire smartphone via passcode/touch ID/face ID, WhatsApp itself can now also be locked. Users are already familiar with this procedure from banking apps or payment apps such as PayPal.

How do I set up WhatsApp Touch ID?

Depending on the iPhone model you own, you can choose between Touch ID and Face ID. And the set up of new security is also very quickly.

Step 1: Open Whatsapp and go on settings and click on the account.

Step2: Now click on the privacy section to get the screen lock.

Step 3: Click on the last menu item- Screen Lock.

Step 4: Activate the touch id by flipping the switch and go for immediately which is a more secure option.

Step 5: Check the Whatsapp, enabled Touch Id setting is working or not properly.

Even though with the screen lock feature, you can reply directly to the incoming message through the notification and answer an incoming call without unlocking the WhatsApp screen lock. But if you try to access another part of the app through the voice call screen, you have to unlock the screen. The same applies to chat history with a text reply through notification. Here, the point of concern is that even with this feature the app is not completely locked down.

There is a way to prevent your message from unauthorized users who are bypassing the app lock through the notification. Disabling the message preview in ios system, prevent you from replying outside the WhatsApp or from the notification and also prevent others from sending replies without your permission.

To do this open the setting app and scroll down for the WhatsApp’s setting. Click on it, and select notification and set show preview and never. Now you would not read the message from the notification. If you truly keep your message secret from others, don’t turn on the notification feature. Unfortunatenately, there is no way to force WhatsApp to verify your fingerprint or face before accepting voice call or texting from WhatsApp.

STEP 1: Open the setting app of the iPhone and click on the notifications.

STEP 2: Scroll down and hit the WhatsApp.

Step 3: Disallow the notifications by flipping the switch.

Even with that exposure, a biometric app lock is a huge improvement for WhatsApp’s security. I hope that more iOS apps adopt it. The feature is only available within the iOS version of the app, but recent testing noticed by WABetaInfo suggests that an Android release is on the way as well.
